Welcome to the Hearth of Chudleigh

Tradition in the Village of Roses

The Hearth of Chudleigh was founded by a former journalist, Mandy, who, after 35 years as a journalist (eight (8) of which were in human rights with lawyers), sought a simpler, more fulfilling life. This 1886 shop in a beautiful valley, where time seems to have paused in the 1960s, provided the perfect opportunity. The hearth symbolises a place where people gather for warmth, stories, and dreams. Here, a love for nature and diversity creates a unique haven for travellers.

A Labor of Love

The Hearth of Chudleigh thrives on meeting new people and creating hearty, old-fashioned country cooking. Located in Chudleigh, the 'Village of Roses,' the shop uses special rose varieties to craft unique products like rose love cakes, rosehip relish, jams, cocktails, and beauty products.

In an increasingly impersonal digital age, The Hearth of Chudleigh offers a grounded, physical space that celebrates simpler times. The vision for the next 5-10 years is to become a destination where people can experience 'the good old days.' Plans also include expanding the online presence, giving customers confidence to buy both in-store and online.

What’s on Offer?

The Hearth of Chudleigh prides itself on hearty, old-fashioned country cooking, using organic vegetables from its garden for unique flavours. Signature rose products include rosehip love cakes, relish, jams, oils, and beauty creams. Additionally, the shop offers unique antiques, allowing customers to walk down memory lane.

Challenges & Triumphs

Keeping an 1886 store viable amidst competition from large chains has been challenging. Employing Paul Wynter, a skilled carpenter, has been pivotal. His expertise has helped restore the store, including the addition of a new beer garden with an outdoor stage. With Paul’s support, the fireside chats are possible. These chats at The Hearth of Chudleigh bring in fascinating stories from diverse backgrounds. From an actress-turned-tree-climber to a centenarian farmer sharing the secret of youth, every visitor adds to the rich tapestry of experiences.

The Hearth of Chudleigh's greatest achievement is bringing people together in a rural area that can sometimes feel isolating. Reviving an old building with a rich history and infusing it with new life has been incredibly rewarding.

A More Personal Approach

What sets The Hearth of Chudleigh apart is its genuine engagement with customers. Time is spent with visitors not just for transactions, but for the joy of knowing and learning from them. At The Hearth of Chudleigh, every interaction is a chance to connect and share.
